GoodWe No Display: Blank Screen

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed for technical accuracy · ~2 min read

A blank GoodWe screen looks alarming, but it does not always mean the inverter is dead. Often the screen is just asleep, or there is simply no power to it at night. The first job is to work out which of three things you are looking at: a sleeping display, a normal night-time shutdown, or a genuine fault.

What a blank screen usually means

  • The screen has gone to sleep. Many GoodWe displays dim and switch off after a while to save power. A tap on the screen or button wakes it.
  • No power at night. A grid-tied unit with no battery has nothing to run the screen once the sun is down and the grid screen times out. This is normal.
  • A failed screen or backlight, while the inverter keeps working in the background.
  • A genuine internal fault, if there is daytime power and it is truly unresponsive.

How to check it safely

  1. Tap the screen or button. If it was only asleep, it wakes straight up.
  2. Check in daylight. The screen needs power. With sun on the panels (or a charged battery), it should come to life.
  3. Look in the app. Open the SEMS Portal or SolarGo app. If it shows the inverter online and producing, only the screen is dead, not the inverter.
  4. If it is truly dead with power present, try one full power cycle (AC off, DC off, wait 5 minutes, restart). If the screen stays black, contact your installer or GoodWe.

Quick decision flowchart

Screen is blank
↓ tap it, check in daylight, check the app
App shows it producing → inverter is fine, only the screen. Not urgent.
Dead with daytime power, app offline too → power-cycle, then service.
If it stays dark with power present, contact your installer or GoodWe.

FAQ

The screen is blank at night, is that normal?

Usually yes. A grid-tied GoodWe with no battery has no power source once the sun is down and the grid screen times out, so the display goes dark overnight and wakes up in the morning. That is normal behaviour, not a fault.

The app shows it working but the screen stays black.

Then the inverter itself is fine and producing power; only the screen or its backlight has failed. It is not urgent because monitoring still works in the SEMS Portal or SolarGo app, but you can have the display serviced if you want the local screen back.
