Fox ESS Temp Fault

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed for technical accuracy · ~2 min read

Temp Fault (also shown as Over Temp) means your Fox ESS internal temperature has gone over the safe threshold, so the inverter throttles its output or stops generating to protect itself. This is the unit looking after its own electronics. In most cases it is caused by poor airflow, direct sun or a dust-clogged heatsink, and it resumes on its own once the temperature drops.

What usually causes it

  • Not enough clearance. The inverter is mounted too close to a wall or another unit, so it cannot shed heat.
  • Direct sunlight or a hot spot. The unit sits in full sun or against a surface that bakes in the afternoon.
  • A sealed or unventilated cabinet that traps heat around the inverter.
  • Dust on the heatsink or vents, which insulates the unit and blocks cooling.
  • A failed internal cooling fan, less common, where it overheats even with good ventilation and a cool ambient.

How to handle it safely

  1. Give it room to breathe. Make sure there is at least about 20cm of clearance around the inverter, especially above and below the heatsink fins.
  2. Get it out of the heat. Shade it from direct sun and never run it inside a sealed cabinet. Improve airflow where it is mounted.
  3. Clear the vents. Gently brush or vacuum dust from the heatsink and ventilation slots with the unit cool. Do not open the case.
  4. Let it cool, then watch. Once it cools down, the Fox ESS should resume generating on its own. Note whether the fault returns once the day heats up again.

Quick decision flowchart

Temp Fault appears
↓ check clearance, sun and dust, then let it cool
It clears after cooling and stays clear → it was airflow or heat. Keep the area open and vents clean.
It keeps overheating with good airflow and ambient below ~45C → the cooling fan has likely failed. Book a service visit.
If ventilation is good and it still overheats, contact your installer.
When to call a professional. If the inverter keeps hitting Temp Fault with at least 20cm clearance, no direct sun and an ambient temperature below about 45C, the internal cooling fan has most likely failed. The fan and heatsink are inside a case carrying lethal voltage, so do not open it. Have a qualified Fox ESS installer inspect and replace the fan.

FAQ

My Fox ESS shows Temp Fault on hot afternoons but is fine by evening, is that a problem?

That pattern points to heat and airflow rather than a fault in the unit. The inverter is throttling to protect itself when the day peaks, then recovering as it cools. Improve the clearance, add shade from direct sun and clear any dust from the vents. If it still happens with good ventilation, ask your installer to check the fan.

Do I need to do anything to clear Temp Fault?

Usually no. Once the inverter cools below its safe threshold it resumes generating by itself. Your job is to remove whatever made it hot, such as poor clearance, direct sun, a sealed cabinet or dust on the heatsink. Only a persistent overheat with good airflow needs a professional to look at the cooling fan.
