Fox ESS Bat Over Temp
Bat Over Temp means the temperature of your Fox ESS battery pack is outside its safe operating range, either too hot, or too cold to charge. The battery management system (BMS) raises this to protect the cells, so charging or discharging is paused until the temperature returns to normal. In most homes this is a weather or location issue, not a faulty battery, and it clears on its own once the pack warms up or cools down.
What usually causes it
- Cold weather. Lithium BMS units block charging below roughly 0 C to protect the cells, so this fault often appears on cold mornings in an unheated garage or outbuilding.
- High ambient heat. In hot conditions it points to poor cooling or a high room temperature around the battery.
- An extreme location. A battery in direct sun, against a hot wall, or in a tight cupboard with no airflow can drift out of range.
- Blocked ventilation, less common, where vents or clearances around the unit are obstructed.
How to handle it safely
- Let the temperature normalise. Allow the battery to return to a normal range. On a cold morning it usually clears once the day warms up; in heat it clears as things cool down.
- Check the surroundings. Make sure the battery is not in an extreme location, in direct sun, beside a heat source, or boxed in with no airflow.
- No reset is needed. Once the temperature is back in range the fault clears by itself. There is nothing to switch off or power-cycle.
- If it persists in normal conditions, when the room is at a comfortable temperature and the fault still shows, contact your battery supplier.

FAQ
Bat Over Temp shows every cold morning, is my battery faulty?
Usually not. Lithium batteries are designed to refuse charging below about 0 C so the cells are not damaged. If the fault appears on cold mornings and clears once the day warms up, that is the BMS protecting the pack. Moving the battery somewhere less exposed, or keeping the space above freezing, normally stops it.
Do I need to reset anything after this fault?
No. Once the battery temperature is back inside the safe range, the fault clears on its own and charging resumes automatically. There is no button to press and no power-cycle needed. Only contact your battery supplier if it keeps showing in normal conditions.
