Fox ESS Communication Fault (Master to Manager)

Updated June 2026 · Reviewed for technical accuracy · ~2 min read
This is an internal hardware fault. Communication Fault (Master/Manager), shown as Error 11, points to a problem inside the inverter, not your house wiring. You can safely do one controlled power cycle. If the fault returns, the unit must be opened and serviced by a qualified technician. Do not open the inverter or touch any internal connectors yourself, the DC side stays live and dangerous even when the screen is dark.

Communication Fault (Master/Manager) means the two internal control boards inside your Fox ESS, the master board and the manager board, have lost their data link. Related codes you may see are SPI Comm Lost and SCI Fault. This is an internal communications breakdown, typically a loose internal ribbon cable or a failing control board, not a problem with the external grid, battery or PV wiring. One clean power cycle sometimes clears a momentary glitch, but a fault that persists needs a technician.

What usually causes it

  • A loose internal ribbon cable. The flat connector that carries data between the master and manager boards can work loose with vibration or thermal cycling.
  • A failing control board. The master or manager board may have a fault that breaks the SPI or SCI data link between them.
  • A firmware or processing glitch. A momentary lock-up can drop the internal link, which is why one controlled restart is worth trying.
  • Moisture or pest ingress inside the enclosure that has disturbed an internal connector, which only a technician should inspect.

How to handle it safely

  1. Do one controlled power cycle. Turn the inverter off in this order: switch off the AC, then turn the PV (DC) isolator to off, then isolate the battery at its breaker. Use the external isolators only, never open the unit.
  2. Wait about 15 minutes. Let the internal capacitors fully discharge so the control boards restart from cold.
  3. Reconnect in reverse order. Battery on, then the PV (DC) isolator on, then the AC on. Give the inverter a few minutes to boot and re-establish the internal link.
  4. If Error 11 comes back, stop here. A repeating internal communication fault means a loose ribbon or a failing board, which requires opening the unit. Do not attempt this yourself. Contact your installer or Fox ESS service.
Why not just keep restarting? A single power cycle is a safe owner step. But if the master and manager boards keep losing contact, repeated restarts will not fix a loose cable or a dying board, and you risk leaving the system in a non-protecting state. Once one clean restart has failed, the next step is a qualified technician, not another reset.

When to call a professional

Call your installer or Fox ESS service if the fault persists after one power cycle. Opening a solar inverter exposes live DC from the panels and stored energy in the battery, both of which can cause a lethal shock or arc flash even when the display is off. Reseating an internal ribbon cable or replacing a control board is work for a qualified technician with the unit safely isolated. An owner should never open the enclosure or unplug internal connectors.

FAQ

Can I fix Error 11 myself by opening the inverter?

No. The only safe owner step is one controlled power cycle using the external AC, PV and battery isolators. If that does not clear it, the fault is inside the unit, where live DC and stored battery energy make it dangerous. Reseating a ribbon cable or swapping a board must be done by a qualified technician.

The fault cleared after a restart, is my inverter fine now?

It may have been a momentary glitch, which one power cycle can clear. Keep an eye on it for a few days. If Communication Fault (Master/Manager) returns, an internal cable or board is likely failing, so book your installer rather than relying on repeated restarts.

⚠️ Safety disclaimer. Solar inverters carry lethal DC and AC voltage even when "off". This guide covers one controlled power cycle using the external isolators only. Opening the inverter, reseating internal cables or replacing a control board must be done by a licensed installer or Fox ESS technician.
